What shapewear does under jeans, and how to size it

Shapewear is completely optional. Plenty of people never wear it, and jeans that fit well don't need it. But a good piece can make fitted denim feel smoother and more settled, stop thighs rubbing, and get rid of lines under a tucked top. The key is knowing what it actually does, choosing a style that suits jeans, and getting the size right, because shapewear that's too small is miserable. Here's the honest version.

What shapewear does (and doesn't do)

Shapewear is made from firm, stretchy knit fabric that gently compresses and holds. Under jeans, that can mean:

  • A smoother line. It evens out the edges of underwear and the line where a waistband sits, so fitted tops tuck cleanly.
  • A held, settled feel. Some people like the supported feeling around the tummy and hips.
  • A shaped seat. Styles with a contoured back can make the seat look rounder and a little lifted.
  • Less rubbing. Shorts-style pieces put a smooth layer between your thighs and between skin and denim seams.
  • No visible panty lines. Seamless knits don't leave edges under fitted fabric.

What it doesn't do: change your body, burn fat, fix posture or have any lasting effect once you take it off. It's a garment, like a good bra. Anyone promising more than that is overselling it.

Which styles work under jeans

StyleGood forUnder jeans
High-waisted briefSmoothing the tummy and waistline, no panty linesExcellent: invisible under a high rise, nothing on the thighs
High-waisted short (mid-thigh)Tummy, hips, thighs and anti-chafingGreat, and doubles as a layer under dresses and skirts
BodysuitAn all-over smooth line from bust to hipsWorks, but can be warm and less convenient
Waist cincherWaist onlyCan leave a ridge under a jeans waistband
Long-leg shapersSmoothing to the kneeUsually too much fabric under denim

With high-rise jeans, choose a piece whose waist reaches at least as high as the jeans' waistband, ideally a little higher. If the shapewear stops below the denim, its edge can roll and press into you under the waistband.

How it should feel

Snug and supported, never painful. A well-fitted piece feels like a firm hug that you stop noticing after a few minutes. Signs it's too small:

  • The waistband rolls down or the legs ride up.
  • It leaves deep red marks or digs in when you sit.
  • It's hard to take a full breath, or you feel tingling or numbness anywhere.
  • You can't wait to take it off.

If any of those happen, take it off and size up. Shapewear is meant to be worn for comfort and confidence, not endured. It's also sensible to give your body a break: wear it for the day, not around the clock, and skip it if your doctor has told you to avoid compression garments.

How to size shapewear

  1. Measure your waist and hips the same way you would for jeans: natural waist, fullest part of the hips, tape level and snug.
  2. Read the brand's chart, not just the letter size. Many shapewear lines, especially those using Asian sizing, run noticeably smaller than US clothing sizes.
  3. If you're between sizes, size up. A slightly larger piece still smooths; a too-small one rolls, digs and pushes things around.
  4. Check the return policy before you buy. Shapewear is often final sale for hygiene reasons, so the chart is your only fitting room.

Wearing it with jeans

  • Put the shapewear on first, smooth it flat, and make sure the waistband is straight and above where your jeans will sit.
  • Choose nude (or close to your skin tone) under light colors and light wash denim, black under dark colors.
  • Tuck your top in over the shapewear, not between it and your skin, for the smoothest line.
  • Your jeans should still fit you properly without shapewear. Don't size down in jeans because of it.

Caring for shapewear

Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, rinse well, gently press out the water and hang or lay flat to dry. Heat from dryers and hot water breaks down the stretch fibers that give shapewear its hold. Having two pieces and alternating them helps each one recover its shape between wears.

Shapewear myths

  • "Tighter works better." It doesn't. Too-small shapewear rolls, creates new bulges where it digs in and is uncomfortable. The right size smooths more.
  • "You need it to wear fitted jeans." You don't. Jeans that fit your waist and hips look great on their own. Shapewear is an extra for people who like the feel.
  • "It shapes you permanently." It works only while you wear it. That's not a flaw; it's what clothing does.
  • "It has to be uncomfortable." Modern seamless knits are made to be worn all day. If yours isn't comfortable, it's the wrong size or style for you.

Days to skip it

Shapewear is optional, so skip it whenever you'd rather. Many people leave it off on very hot days, for long flights or drives, and for workouts, when breathable, lighter underwear is more comfortable. Pick it back up for the outfits where you enjoy the smooth line most, like a fitted dress or a tucked bodysuit with high-rise jeans.

How our shapewear fits into this

We make two pieces designed to go under the Curve Jean, and both have a high waist so they sit above its high-rise waistband:

  • Smoothing Shorts ($24): high-waisted with mid-thigh legs and a contoured back. Seamless, 86% nylon and 14% spandex with firm stretch. Nude or black, XS-S to 6XL.
  • Lifting Briefs ($22, or $18 each for 2 or more): seamless high-waisted briefs with a shaped back, in a polyester, nylon and spandex blend. Nude or black, S to 5XL.

Both run small (Asian sizing). Here's how they line up with your usual size:
